Reshaped: Day 8- Mary

The Prompting
Reading Luke 1:26-38

Glorious angel with a grand announcement. No doubt Gabriel’s appearance jarred her. But it was his words that left her speechless. Highly favored…the Lord is with you…blessed among women…these were salutations of great honor! It is little wonder that Mary was bewildered and even troubled by the encounter. Her eyes had never beheld an angel. And his message was overwhelming!

Once Gabriel settled Mary, he informed her that she had been chosen by God to carry the Messiah. But Mary was a virgin. As we certainly saw through Moses, the impossible becomes possible through God’s power. When Gabriel explained the miracle the Holy Spirit would perform, Mary received it as absolute truth.

Consider the contrast of Moses’ response. No wonder Mary was highly favored. She had an enormous faith. Her heart was so open, and she recognized the voice of God. In the coming years, she would need all the grace that God would extend to her. Being the mother of Jesus was an incredible privilege, but not without an incredible cost.

Questions

  • What scripture comes to mind when you think of Mary’s faith?
  • A virgin birth ~ how would she explain this to Joseph, her betrothed? Imagine the emotions she faced. No one in the world ever experienced what Mary faced.
